Learning at Strutt's North Mill Belper

We facilitate school visits, and an outreach programme where we bring learning programmes to education and community settings.

Our learning programmes are adaptable for all Key Stages. Sessions are delivered by qualified teachers and we have a range of activities that can be tailored and focused to your needs. We operate a “pay as you can” system, making our quality learning experiences accessible to all.

We believe history should be hands on, interactive and most of all, fun. We have therefore devised activities that we can use either here in and around the mill or in your own classrooms, using costumes, artefacts, photographs and games.

Topics we cover:

  • The Victorian schoolroom.
  • The story of cotton.
  • The mill working children.
  • Victorian cottage life.
  • Victorian wash day.
  • Importance of the Strutt family.
  • The growth of Belper in the industrial revolution.
  • Belper as a World Heritage site.
  • Waterpower.
  • The first fireproof cotton mill.
  • Social order in Victorian times.
  • Victorian toys and craft session.
  • The artefacts challenge.
  • Enslavement.
  • Architecture of the fire proof mill.

Please contact us using the initial enquiry link below if there are topics here that interest you. All sessions can be tailor made to suit the ability of your learners and a member of our team will contact you to discuss this.
